Course Description:
Recognizing the destructive role media have played in many conflicts such as in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, and holding in mind the potential of free and independent media for fostering a desired peace, NGOs are realizing the crucial role that media play in peacebuilding. This course will address the various concepts of media and peacebuilding and focus on media assistance in conflict regions, mainly in a short- to medium-term perspective. It aims to present a clear picture on the concepts; provide an overview of the strategies applied by different actors; and highlight the actual trends and future challenges.
About the Instructor:
Ross Howard is a consultant in journalism and media capacity-building. His work encompasses wide international experience in the field, in research and analysis and in curriculum development, and with particular reference to conflict and peacebuilding, democratization, and governance and elections. He is an award-winning professional journalist, a journalism faculty member at Langara College, Vancouver and is president of the international journalism training consortium Media&Democracy Group.
